I have a deadline to produce a website (it's a generous deadline - or so it seems at the beginning). Stay tuned!
Family Tree Data
This will be a sub-domain of the site that contains a range of family tree data that can be navigated around. Anyone will be able to browse through the data associated with those family members who are no longer living but to see those who have survived to the current time you will need to sign in.
At the moment the family tree data sign-in requires its own username and password which you will have to request before you can access the details about all the living people, but if you're a family member then these can be provided. I can forsee no reason to provide a username to anyone who is not part of the family but if you think you can make a case for having access you can always ask!
Password access
As previously said if you want to see details of living people then you'll have to get some credentials. Over time the intent is to extend the site with other functionality and there is some risk that you'll need a separate username and password for that (or at least log-in separatey to different parts of the site. If you know of a way to overcome this problem that is not too complex (or costly) to implement then do let me know
Scope of family tree
Currently the family tree data only covers the family of the site owner and there are numerous cousins, spouses and children who are not covered. The hope is that over time other (extended) family members will expand the tree to cover other branches of the family.
What else is the site going to include?
Probably nothing of interest to anybody outside the family so for most folks this will most likely be the last visit to the site that's worthwhile! As a starter it will inlude some material on our family tree. This was previously on a (now defunct) site called GrannyJo.net but software changes have forced that site into oblivian. After that - who knows? The first part of this can be accessed from above.
Family Tree material
The original grannyjo.net site used software called Joaktree to hold all the family tree data, but that is no longer either supported or functioning. I've done some experimenting with some software called Webtrees that looks as if it can do what I want so I'll start off using that - but if anyone knows of better family tree software (that doesn't carry too much cost) then please let me know. I also have a stack of PowerPoint images that I originally used for the family tree so I may see if I can find a suitable way to display some of those.
Family news and discussion
I plan to put this stuff in a private area of the site and only make it available within the family - it'll be a sort of family level facebook site without the advertising and without the intrusion of all the crap that seems to have built up around facebpook. Ifr you're part of the family and want to get access to this then drop us a line.
